image 1The town of Vis is situated on the northern side of the island of Vis along the beautiful bay of St. George. It is connected to Split by ferryboat and catamaran services (it is situated 30 nautic miles form Split). During the summer season it is connected to towns on th eitalian coast.
The city has developed by the remains of the antic Issa, it is the first urban centre in Croatia (Issa was the first organized state in the Adriatic). The antic Issa was built in the area of Gradin, on the north-west part of the bay. It was fortified by the wall which has been partly preserved. By the eastern and the western side of the antic city, there are the necropolis Martvilo and Vlaska njiva, in the southern part of the antic city there were baths from the beginning of the 1st century (remains of the walls and mosaics). On the peninsula Prirovo there was the Roman amphitheatre. On that place, in the 16th century the Franciscian monastery was built.
Todays town was made by connectin two smaller ones: Luka in the west and Kut in the east. The older preserved edifices are dating back to the 16th and 17th century. The most famous one the the Renaissance palace Gariboldi, the summer house of the Croatian poet Marin Gazarovic (fist half of the 17th century), the house named Jaksa and the house Dojmi-Delupis image 2with the collection of the antique archeological findings. In the 17th century Vis was fortified by four towers.
Aside for the cultural treasure Vis is famous for its natural beauties. In the vicinity of the place there are pebble and sandy beaches (Parja, Rogacic, Mala and Velika Svitnja), in the hinterland and on the way to Komiža there are vineyards for the production of the autoctone wine of Vis, like Vugava, top quality Plavac and quality white wines.
The "Cultural summer" with the rich cultural programme is organized during the summer. Theater plays, concerts, Dalmatian harmony singing group concerts, jazz and rock nights take place. In the town and its surroundings there is a big choice of restaurants and konobas which attract with its famous dalmatian cuisine, homemade wine and pleasant atmosphere.
