In the 3rd century Greek colonists from the island of Vis founded Tragurion at the place where today's Trogir stands.Tragurion eventually developed into a major port. On the fall of the Roman Empire, it became a part of the Bizantine Dalmatia. During the migration of Croats the citizens of the destroyed Salona escaped to Trogir.
The old city's core was formed during the 13th and 15th centuries inside the walls which were renovated during the Venetian rule in the 15th century. The Venetians built two towers which have been preserved till today: the Fortress Kamerlengo and Saint Mark's tower. The older, eastern part of the city, has developed around the main square with the cathedral, and Pasika, the western part of the city has developed later.
